Neuner & Hornsteiner Cello, Germany 1825
This cello has recently been completely restored in the Alex Grant Violins workshop. Already almost 200 years old the cello is now robust and well able to take on the next 150 years! On first seeing the cello, its comfortable, dark, old patina is striking but its big, projecting sound is its crowning glory . . . definitely one to try out!
Neuner and Hornsteiner was established in Mittenwald, Bavaria around 1800 when two major violin making families joined forces. It was to go on to become one of the most influential firms in Germany, developing a large workshop and organising a significant ‘out-working’ system based on piece-work. They made the full range of orchestral instruments, from good entry level up to fully professional instruments and controlled an intricate export network for instruments from the region
