Silvestre & Maucotel cello bow, Paris c.1905

The Silvestre & Maucotel firm, a partnership of Hippolyte Silvestre and Ernest Maucotel, was formed in Paris in the 1890s. They produced very fine instruments and bows.

As usual in such firms, the workshops employed, directly or indirectly, some of the best craftsmen available at the time.

This bow comprises an octagonal pernambuco stick with a silver mounted ebony frog which is decorated with pearl eyes; the three piece adjuster of silver / ebony / silver, capped with a pearl eye. It produces a very focussed tone, particularly playing spiccato and sautille. Well balanced, it allows for long, even and consistent tone production; smooth and ‘lush’ to play!

This bow has been withdrawn from sale. CVCB176.
