Alois Vincens Honek, 15 ½” Viola, Prague, Czech Republic, 1952.
A very nice 15 ½” Czech viola, in great condition, made by Alois Honek in 1952 and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the family workshop. The viola is loosely modelled on the fabulous sounding, full-bodied violas of the Nicola Amati workshop. The narrow, regularly flamed maple in the back plate is mirrored on the ribs, the top plate of similar quality tonewood and all is covered in a reddish-brown varnish.
The Honek family of luthiers worked in Prague from around the turn of the 20th century, Alois Vincens presumably learning the craft from his father, also named Alois. Prague has long been a centre of fine instrument making and inspiration would have been ever present.
This is a really nice sounding viola in a comfortable size, at an affordable price. It has a ‘Master’ set-up by our colleague Volker Beilharz and sports Evah Pirazzi strings. This viola represents great value for money and would be suitable for the advanced or advancing student or dedicated amateur player.
