C.N. Bazin French Violin Bow, c.1890
In fabulous condition, this bow has an elegant ‘swan’ head; usually only found on cello bows, this style of head was occasionally incorporated on violin bows at the C.N. Bazin workshop. It is stamped “TOURTE. L”, this being one of the trade stamps used by Bazin.
Charles Nicolas Bazin was one of the most important French bowmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied with his father, Francois Xavier Bazin, and was prematurely thrust into a leadership role, running the busy workshop on the latter’s early death. He went on to develop a large and influential business in Mirecourt and to become internationally recognised as an important, highly regarded master.
