Edward Popplewell J’Anson, Violin, Manchester, 1856.
This very attractive violin appears to have been loosely modelled on the work of G.B. Guadagnini. It would have originally been varnished in a complex faux-antique pattern and now, with 170 years under its belt, it additionally sports a genuine aged patina. The two piece back and sides are of medium flamed maple, the head of plainer wood. The top plate is of two pieces of fine tonewood, all covered in a warm, shaded, golden-brown varnish.
E.P. J’Anson worked at Leeds and Manchester and is regarded as one of the finest English copyists of classical Italian instruments. This extraordinary talent unfortunately resulted in much of his output allegedly being given Italian labels with the result that his own original labelled work is now quite rare and, as an accomplished maker, he is less well known and less appreciated than he rightly deserves.
A fine violin, fitted up to our ‘Master’ level with Obligato and Evah Pirazzi Gold strings, this is a rare instrument suitable for the dedicated amateur, advanced student or young professional.
