‘Gand Freres’ French Cello Bow, c.1870
This is an interesting French cello bow, having a round Ironwood stick. Ironwood and Snakewood were often found on baroque bows but these woods are less frequently seen on modern bows. The stick is marked with three dots on the lower facets of the heel, intentionally applied and presumably intended to convey a message to the initiated. The silver mounted frog is of ebony decorated with a pearl eye; the three-piece adjuster of silver/ebony/silver, capped with a pearl eye.
Gand Freres, as the name suggests, were brothers Charles Adolphe and Charles Nicolas Eugene, the sons of Charles François Gand; all three being hugely influential on the Parisien scene. The brothers forming ‘Gand Freres’ around the mid 1800’s. They were internationally famous as violin makers, restorers and experts. Bows were bought in from small selection of the great Parisien master bow makers of the period and, as was the normal practice, stamped with the shop stamp.
A beautiful condition Ironwood bow which would be suitable for the avid collector, advanced student or young professional player.
