German Cello, late 19th century, ‘Postacchini’ label

A very attractive, hand made, professional quality German cello from the late 19th century. The cello has a trade copy ‘Andreas Postacchini’ label but the build quality is higher than that attribution would indicate and we could imagine this coming from one of the top-end violin making workshops from either the Markneukirchen area, or a similar violin making centre.

The beautiful back plate is of one piece of slab-cut medium, regularly flamed maple with the quilted figure descending from left to right; the sides are of similar wood; the head of narrower flamed maple; the top plate is of two pieces of straight grained spruce of closely spaced reed lines at the centre, growing wider towards the flanks; the varnish is of a light orange colour over a golden ground and applied in a complex, shaded faux-antique pattern.

The cello has been fitted up to a ‘Master’ level by Michael McMahon, Sydney, and has been played professionally over the past few years; it would be suitable for the advanced or advancing student or the young professional player.
