Hugh Withycombe, Violin, Australia 2020

This violin by Hugh Withycombe is based on a personal model strongly influenced by the designs of Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu.  The model has wider centre bouts, which combined with full arching and open C's facilitate a full, responsive sound palate. This design is further enhanced by bold large sound holes enabling the player to access a wide range of dynamics.  The choice of highest quality tonewood and intensely coloured thin oil varnish work with the carefully executed design to deliver a successful, reliable instrument that is both easy to play yet has the texture and strong core sound necessary for both solo and ensemble playing.

Hugh is a graduate of the Newark School of Violin Making in the UK. Following graduation, Hugh worked in London for a couple of years before returning to Australia to open his own workshop in Canberra. He regularly attends professional development courses at Oberlin in the USA and is the current President of the Australian Violin Makers Association. His instruments are played in Australia, Europe and the USA.

The violin is a professional quality instrument, fitted up to a ‘Master’ standard by the maker and would be ideally suited to the advanced student or young professional.
