Noel Sweetman, New Zealand, 16 1/4″ Viola
Noel Sweetman is one of New Zealand’s premier violin makers. Having started making in the 1970’s in Cambridge in the North Island and having gained a richly deserved reputation for his fine quality of work, he has now retired. To New Zealand’s great benefit, he has passed on the craft to his son and grandson who continue the tradition.
This 16 ¼” viola from 1986 is a typical example of his work and it produces a big, well balanced sound with the typical warmth of a large viola ‘C’ combined with the crisp, clear treble that offers both volume and carrying power. The back plate is of two pieces of medium, regularly flamed maple with matching sides and a fine spruce top plate. The varnish of a light golden brown.
The viola is set-up to our ‘Master’ standard and would be suitable for advanced and advancing students or young professional violist.
