Houshang Akbari, Urmia, Iran violin, 2019

Houshang Akbari, Urmia, Iran violin, 2019

Iran has a long and illustrious history in creative arts, from the written word to painting and film; so it was a real pleasure to find that violin making, albeit on a small scale, is still practiced by Houshang Akbari and his daughter.

Description

Akbari was born in Urmia, Iran in 1957 and studied with the French trained master, Ebrahim Ghanbari Mehr.  This violin is made on a personal model, that shows a healthy respect for the old masters whilst incorporating several small touches that reflect the maker’s own experience.  The back plate is of two pieces of beautifully figured maple with matching sides and head, the top plate, also of two pieces, is of fine straight grained spruce, all covered in a light warm golden varnish.

The tone is open and clear, generally bright, but with a nice, textured richness in the lower register.  It offers a good, fast response to the bow.

A slightly shorter string length and well shaped neck make it very comfortable to play.

This is a violin with lots of volume and carrying power, making it altogether an excellent advanced violin and unbeatable value for money.
