Hulda Jónsdóttir – Co-Principle 2nd Violin Royal Danish Orchestra
“I recently the pleasure of playing on one of Hugh’s newest violins and it was an immensely enjoyable experience! The sound of the instrument is warm and resonant and I found the violin unusually responsive and vibrant, I was able to create nuances and colours across the whole range of dynamics with ease and fluidity.
I can wholeheartedly recommend his craftsmanship to any musician on the lookout for a new instrument.”

“I played a violin made by Hugh Withycombe in 2020 for one year, and I can confirm its excellent craftsmanship and sound quality. The violin is remarkably well-balanced, making it easy to transition smoothly from one string to another. Additionally, the instrument is highly responsive—whether you’re playing pianissimo or fortissimo, it immediately adapts to your touch. It’s very playable and offers a wide variety of harmonics.
The sound is warm, yet it projects well, and the precise positioning of the fingerboard and the instrument’s overall design makes it a pleasure to play. With this violin, I’ve performed much of the classical repertoire, including works by Vivaldi, Corelli, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, and more.
I would particularly recommend this violin for romantic-period music rather than baroque or classical, as its tonal color is more suited to the romantic style. However, it’s versatile enough to handle any repertoire without major issues.”
