German Cello Bow, Saxon School c.1870

Many German bows before the turn of the 20th century utilised Ironwood or Snakewood. This bow is made from Snakewood, the wood most commonly seen in baroque bows, these woods are usually a little higher in density than Pernambuco allowing the bowmaker to work them a little thinner.

This bow is from the highly important instrument and bow making centre of Markneukirchen in Saxony where large numbers of high-quality bows were destined to travel to violin makers in the four corners of the world.
