This is a sensational looking and sounding violin having a beautiful one piece back with the flame ascending from left to right. The varnish is of a dark red-brown which is typical of the Paris school of the period, being so influenced by the brilliant dark red varnishes favoured by Nicolas Lupot and his followers. The varnish may be slightly opaque, but the sound is clear, rich and powerful; truly a sound quality that we don’t encounter every day!

Charles Nicolas Eugene Gand trained under his father and brother, Charles Adolph. He was an accomplished violinist and developed a high level of expertise. The brothers ran a successful business but on the death of Charles Adolphe in 1866, the firm integrated with the Bernardel workshop, becoming ‘Gand and Bernardel’. Another hugely successful business, they employed several talented makers in the workshop with the output largely supervised by Charles Nicolas Gand.

It has been fitted up in our workshop with fine quality rosewood fittings and Evah Pirazzi Gold strings. This instrument would be suitable for the advanced student or professional violinist.
