Giuseppe Corrizzo Australian16 ¾” Viola, 1996

It’s always a pleasure to present Australian work and in this case, Italian-Australian. This viola is typical of the maker’s work and being Italian-Australian it conveys some of the warmth of Australia combined with the verve or flamboyance encountered in some modern Italian instruments. Larger violas like this have the advantage of lifting the ‘C’ string sound which can often be a little harder to draw out on smaller instruments.

Giuseppe (Joe) Corrizzo was born in Italy in 1940 and emigrated to Australia in 1965. A larger-than- life character, as well indulging in violin making, Joe was a trained singer and performed in his early years in Italy and, as a semi-professional singer, appeared on various televised talent shows in Australia.

The viola has recently been fitted up in the Alex Grant Workshop using Evah Pirazzi strings and would be suitable for players of a medium to larger frame at the intermediate to advanced student level
