Malcolm Collins Violin, New Zealand, 2017

Based on his personal model, inspired by the Italian masters of the 18th century this violin features a trimmed back body size reminiscent of Giuseppe del Gesu. Malcolm’s violin has a great voice for a smaller instrument. The warm golden coloured varnish is of his own make using the fossilised resin of the New Zealand Kauri Pine, a rare and highly valued resin for varnish making.

Malcolm Collins originally trained as a boat builder and exhibits the remarkable tool skills required by these old crafts. He has played viola in local orchestras for many years and is one of New Zealand’s leading violin makers. Malcolm works in the Hutt Valley near Wellington in the North Island of New Zealand.

The instrument retains the maker’s original bridge and soundpost and is fitted with Larsen strings. This violin would be ideally suited to the advancing student, dedicated amateur or young professional player.
