Alois Sandner German Viola Bow, c.1970
Sandner’s father, also named Alois, came from the Bohemian tradition and passed on these techniques to his son. After the Second World War, Alois jnr settled near Frankfurt and remained there for the rest of his working life, producing both modern and baroque style bows.
The diamond shaped decorations seen on the frog are typical of his work.
This bow balances well on the strings and produces a nice warm tone. It works very well for double stoppings and has a powerful upper half for martellato.
It produces a nicely articulated sound and can be sweet and gentle close to the heel. A lovely bow to use.
