W.E. Hill & Sons Gold mounted Cello Bow c.1961

A virtually mint condition Gold mounted bow made by Leslie Baily in the Hill workshop around 1961. Hill bows in general are a by-word for consistent high quality, the makers from the early pre-WWII period such as Baily, being especially highly regarded.

This cello bow stamped “W.E. Hill & Sons”, has a gold mounted round Pernambuco stick with an ebony frog which is decorated with Parisienne Eyes, with a ‘stopped rail’ fitting on the stick; the three-piece adjuster of gold/ebony/ gold, capped with a pearl eye.

W.E.Hill & Sons, founded in 1880 in London, became the preeminent dealership in the U.K., employing a stable of the finest European craftsmen, producing instruments and bows of the highest quality over many years; they were also highly respected experts on a global scale with unparalleled knowledge of the early Italian masters.
